Does my husband have sleep apnea?

MY husband is a heavy snorer for a start and over the past year or so i have noticed that he will have a break in the snoring for 6-10 seconds, during this time he is not inhaling or exhaling. Sometimes it’s like he kick starts his breathing again by his whole body jolting, after that he is fine for another few minutes. What do you think? Could he have sleep apnea?

What you are describing is classic sleep apnea.

  2. hey hows it goin says:

yes, sleep apnea is an air pipe blockage that disrupts sleep. it can compromise health, and it occurs when the sleeper stops breathing. (Although most people will wake up gasping for air) Go have him see a doctor. There is treatement for severe cases .

  3. Brad says:

It is possible. Get a sleep evaluation done.

  4. yamking7 says:

    Yes. That’s sleep apnea.

  5. David T says:

he should see a sleep specialist for that answer.

i am not the right person to say this since i am not a doctor but i think that he should get some test done that is not normal well good luck

Yup. It sounds like sleep apnea.
Often an oxygen mask or a machine that pushes regular room air into a mask over his nose and mouth will help him continue breathing during sleep. Weight loss can also help reduce the snoring and improve breathing.

Yes, he could have sleep apnea. This condition is far more common that you might think. It’s especially true if he is even a little over weight. The best thing to do is talk to your dr and maybe have a sleep study done. Could save a life. Best to you.

He almost certainly does. Sleep apnea is purported to be dangerous, and a sleep study is in order to determine how severe it is. Popular remedies are a CPAP machine, which pumps air into a mask on the face; and surgery, to open the airway a bit.

    Sounds like it.

My daughter experienced the same symptoms. She had her tonsils and adnoids removed. Now she’s breathing reguarly withou interruption at night.

Have a doctor see him soon.

Sounds like sleep apnea to me! Talk to your doctor and have him scheduled for a sleep test. They will check to see if he needs mechanical help with breathing at night so he is not short of oxygen. Good luck!

  12. Doc says:

The only way to know for sure is to do a sleep study. The symptoms you describe are suggestive of sleep apnea, but monitoring through the night is needed to make sure. Good Luck

Based on your description there is a good chance that he does. i suggest you see a doctor because it can potentially be a life-threatening conditon if left untreated.

Yes this sounds very typical of sleep apnea, especially the 6-10 seconds that he is not breathing. It is a serious problem and can lead to heart failure if not treated in time.
He needs to talk to his doctor and get a referral for a sleep study. Pulmonologists and Neurologists can do this type of study. Make sure they are boarded in sleep (certified to do sleep studies).
Treatment options are to lose weight (if your husband is overweight), and/or surgery to remove extra tissue in the throat (if there is too much tissue there and your husband can go through the surgery) and/or a CPAP machine (a type of breathing machine with a mask that he would have to wear at night).
    Good Luck.
