Question about people whom have sleep apnea?

Do people who have sleep apnea also have trouble breathing while they are awake, or only at night?

It depends. Sleep apnea is caused when the tissue in the throat overlaps over your airway. Some people have larger tissue in their throat causing breathing problems while they are awake. Sleep apnea patients are more likely to have allergies and asthma which both cause breathing trouble while awake and asleep. So yes, sleep apnea patients can have difficulty breathing during the day.

Depends on what the issue that’s making them have trouble breathing is. If it’s asthma, then it’s bound to cause problems whether it’s day or night. If you’re worried about it, go to the doctor.

Only at nite, unless they have some other condition causing a separate problem.

A person having difficulty breathing during the day would normally NOT undergo screening for sleep apnea.

    Generally NO.

common sign of sleep apnea is fighting sleepiness during the day, at work, or while driving. You may find yourself rapidly falling asleep during the quiet moments of the day when you’re not active.

Fatigue, anxiety and high blood pressure (similar symptoms at times with breathlessness) are the other not so common symptoms of sleep apnea.

A person with sleep apnea stops breathing only in sleep. So, it doesn’t matter if is a day or night. And every time when the person wakes up, he will feel drowsy and fatigue…

I have sleep apnea. I don’t have too much trouble breathing anymore when I sleep. I never had trouble in the day. But I used to wake up choking violently on my own spit or churning up what I ate. Only occasionally have that problem now. Don’t know why. I do wish I slept like a kid again! Miss those days.

  7. brainhurt says:

Sleep apnea only causes breathing problems during the time you are asleep. A person with sleep apnea may also have asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which will definitely cause breathing problems while awake.

Sleep apnea, in and of itself, does not cause breathing problems during the day.
